Why (Some) Liberals Hate Sarah Palin

advertisement

Hot Air's Allahpundit:

Jim Geraghty [theorizes] why it is that the left despises [Palin] so. He's certainly got part of the answer — happy, successful pro-life conservative women are a grievous offense to leftist feminism — but I think he misses the element of sheer contempt they have for her intellect. To the left, I think, she embodies a sort of comfort with ignorance that they think characterizes most/all conservatives.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

From the article:

But I think there is an even simpler version of this argument: George W. Bush.

This article is the first I've seen that offers a clear, plausible explanation for why some on the left have utter contempt for Palin while some on the right absolutely adore her.

Independent, strong, humorous, family woman, successful, well spoken, career driven, well paid, politically shrewd, respected, sexy, making her own decisions, happy, taking responsibility for her own life and future, a go getter and many positive things more.

Liberals hate those types of women because she reminds them of their own insufficiency. They want her to fail! Because if she doesn't, they have. The envy and hatred when I read all the posts in these last few days that ridicules Palin is stunning....

To be able to take all this immature nonsense and personal attacks under immense pressure is admirable. I wish Sarah Palin the very best.

usfreestar: this is the second time in two days I noticed you painting liberals with the same brush - as each of us think exactly alike. It's just not true.

Also, not all liberal women are "failures," though I don't know what you mean by failure. I'm independent, humorous, put my kids before everything, make my own decisions, etc. I just happen to have different ideas than Palin. Do you truly think only conservative women can be happy, productive citizens?

I honestly don't know where you get your ideas or information. I dislike Sarah Palin because I think she's superficial, self-centered, uninformed, hypocritical, believes that abstinence-only suffices as sex ed, despite her daughter's pregnancy and thinks that humans and dinosaurs occupied the same planet at the same time.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but you're wrong. Furthermore, I wouldn't be as shallow as to categorize all conservatives as the same.

Finally, Sarah Palin has not taken criticism under intense pressure. She's continually blown her top and finally quit. And she's hardly well-spoken.

But as one human to another, I'll wish her the best, too, as long as she agrees to stay out of our faces.

What Dan said.

Plus - it was obvious she had no business being in the game. Anyone who watched her antics could see not only what amounted to simple desperation, pounding the manufactured "terrorist" line, and then her false confidence "showmanship" designed to hide her Sword of Damocles discomfort.

The only realists around anymore are lefties.

Look, it's very simple. In a leader you look for understanding, guts, and the ability to think on your feet.

Palin has failed in these things at every test. Her comments on foreign affairs indicate she understands nothing of life outside her small town. She hasn't had the guts to own up to her mistakes with the highway to nowhere, expensing taxpayers for travel while staying home in bed, and a slew of very public flip-flops and gaffes. And thinking on her feet she comes up with stuff so dumb even Dubya wouldn't do it.

I don't want to take anything away from her as a successful hockey mom, spokesmodel, and small town mayor. But as a governor and as a VP candidate she simply failed. I think she resigned because of some scandal that just hasn't hit yet. She's got nothing but scandals in the past. So ... there's got to be someone else apart from her and Rush ...

This is the last line of her resignation remark:

"In the words of General MacArthur said (sic), 'We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.'"

This attribution couldn't be more wrong; it was actually Marine Major General Oliver Smith who said something like: "Retreat? Hell, we're attacking in another direction", this after glamorpuss MacArthur and his sycophant Ned Almond hung Smith and his 1st Marines out at the Chosin Reservoir. The remark is considered apocryphal, the sentiment is attributed to O P Smith.

Smith getting his forces out intact from the biggest trap in world history is one of the all-time great feats of American arms, and it was critically necessary. Thank you, Chosin Frozen, and all your comrades for saving the world (which by your sacrifice you did).

Sarah Palin is no O.P. Smith, but she may be a Douglas MacArthur megalomaniacal diva backstabber (takes one to know one; and I know). It just figures she'd revere that knucklehead, but can't get her quotes right. She needs to be quoting his "old soldiers" remarks given to Congress.

Great article and commentary, I never thought about how much Palin actually does resemble Bush II. For my part, I've never hated anybody for their views, and I'm certainly not afraid of anyone as an individual. It's the potential for policy mischief-making that worries me. Bush seemed like a nice guy, but I knew that his policies in office would be disasterous, especially with his cabinet choices. Palin, well, I suppose you could enjoy a light lunch with her, but honestly do we as a nation really want to go down her chosen road? Really?

THIS DOES NOT DESCRIBE Palin-she is ignorant, does not take responsibility, talks like a hick, she just gave up her career , no one respects her, narcissistic, and bizarre-this describes her.

We do not like her because she is against everything we believe in equal work for equal pay, freedom of choice, and everything is gods will. She thinks that because she is cute she can walk around and say ignorant @!$%# and no one will notice. She put her town in debt then went on to be gov and quit that after getting some exposure.

she is all about herself she showed this when she paraded her pregnant daughter and did not put her children first.

Fame and Money are everything to her. And every problem is the medias fault-none of it is her doing, the ethical complaints were around before the media even knew who she was. She has made her daughters life worse by making her personal problems everyday gossip. She had her face all over the magazines glorifying teen pregnancy and then says abstinence is the answer, yeah cause it worked so well for your family. Her suggestion that she left office for a higher calling has me laughing she already had too high of a calling (being Gov) and she could not hack that . Her higher calling is to be on more talk shows and help ghost right her book-all about her yep you betcha

If this actually accurately described Sarah Palin, liberals would probably support her more.

The ability of conservatives to turn off their brains in a frantic effort to prop Palin up as the best thing to happen to politics since Roosevelt is really encouraging. Hopefully she makes it through the primaries in 2012 so we don't have to spend a lot of money and effort to get Obama re-elected. If you clowns actually put up a credible challenger, we might have to work for it. Instead, with Palin, it'll be a re-election blowout to make Bush-Kerry look like Reagan-Mondale.

She draws insults because she solicits them. She has not learned that each time she puts herself in front of the media, it's like stand-up comedy. She keeps slamming her head against a wall, then complains when it hurts.

Speaking of projection...

I’ll leave you with two pro-Sarah pieces for balance, one from Republican bigwig Fred Malek calling her “smart, curious, hard working, charming, and effective” and attesting that he’s personally seen her hold her own in private discussions on policy with heavy hitters. The other’s from Jim Geraghty, theorizing why it is that the left despises her so. He’s certainly got part of the answer — happy, successful pro-life conservative women are a grievous offense to leftist feminism — but I think he misses the element of sheer contempt they have for her intellect. To the left, I think, she embodies a sort of comfort with ignorance that they think characterizes most/all conservatives. Why they’ve come to see her that way is complicated (part of it’s probably educational pedigree, part of it’s her affinity for rural pastimes like hunting, part of it’s the Katie Couric interview and the canned answers she gave at the debate with Biden), but I think it’s a mistake to assume that their antipathy is rooted in nothing but fear and defensiveness. That’s not true of the right vis-a-vis The One, after all. Is it? (emphasis mine)

Here's why liberals (especially women) can't stand Sarah Palin. Most liberals take no pride in their appearance. Most liberal women wear those identical goofy looking glasses (you know the ones I'm talking about: Black frame, small rectangular lens), no make-up, bland clothing, unkept hair, "Aunt Jamima" bandana's over their head, no shower in days. Liberal men wear those tie-dyed shirts, same goofy glasses, "Taliban" beards, and just an overall unkept appearance.

When liberals see someone as attractive as Sarah Palin, someone that takes pride in their appearance, it disgusts liberals to see someone so anti-them.

Ummm... Ron... I think the word you intended to use, twice was "unkempt", not "unkept".

Regardless, thank you, Ron, for explaining why I don't respect Sarah Palin, and explaining that those liberals, Angela Jolie and Brad Pitt for example, are actually hideously unattractive. It's a shame that they don't have the self respect to put themselves together before they go out in public.

Although I must admit that I didn't realize that Angelina and Brad don't shower for days at a time. It must be really unpleasant sitting next to them at the Academy Awards.

Must be alot of them. Obama got the job. Palin aint that good looking. She copied Tina Fey.

It could be that they just come to know her (as most of us did) and got tired of trying to figure out what in blue blazes she talking about? Not liking her does not have to mean something sinister, you know?

She was built up to be far more than she was. All these jobs she's supposed to have had but checking into it, she quit every one of them. She went to 6 schools to get her one crummy degree in Jouralism. Altho she does have some good eyes and can even see Russia, she is far lacking in knowledge and intelligence and speaking abilities. Her down home talking may work with some but not everyone is a hick.

I do not dislike her because she's a repblican but because she tries to be more than she is. There are hundreds of women out there far more qualified than Palin is.

She could teach Palin a thing or two about being tough.

The Pit-bull with Lipstick ran from the game.

And are you all just sick of her stupid analogies... Just say what the hell you mean.

If she is not using Hockey... it is Basketball and doing a piss poor job at both.

You don't pass the ball and then run from the game... you wait for the opportunity to have it passed back to you and you continue to play the opponent with that strategy... keep them guessing who will take it to the hole.

But that would require the ability to work well with others... and she does not, unless they obey momma bear.

I am a liberal and Sarah Palin offends me. The same thing that offended me about Ronald Reagan, George Bush and hundreds of lesser lights is what offends me about Sarah Palin they are at the forefront of an anti intellectual movement which has ground government to a halt and moved our nation at least two generations in reverse. They attack the ideals and institutions which have made us great wrapping themselves in the flag while willingly selling our birthright to A Global Economy, Supply Side, A New World Order , Preemptive War, Service Economy and dozens of Euphenisms for wealth creation and the destruction of every social program created since 1932.

The idea that complexity of thought and action is a negative trait is what they sold America. Mr. Reagan came to power by disparaging American government, education, blacks, the poor, the American Labor Movement and the Womens Movement. Extraordinarily wealthy men and women with an agenda of tearing down all post Hoover Social institutions and furthering the cause of US and Foreign Corporate interests at the expense of US jobs. Until the 80s the vast majority of Americans believed that teachers were to be revered, a college education was not some Commie front, American workers deserved to be well paid, that opportunity was for all and that our own success was dependent in part on how well everyone was doing. Mrs. Palin like her political antecedents always blame someone else for everything and rely not on our collective intellect and innovation but somehow relating all ills and successes to embracing their backward forms of Christianity and a belief that if everyones family lives and acts exactly as mine the world will be great.

There is no such thing as a Consumer Society a Service Economy or Supply Side Economics they are unsustainable myths. Electing leaders who have obviously neither read the Constitution nor comprehend what they have been told about it is ruinous for our form of government. Electing leaders who can't comprehend micro from macro economics and who mock those who attain some degree of knowledge on any subject as not being straight talkers or down to earth have made us a second rate industrial nation is criminal. Trading science for Noah and his Ark is embarrassing. Having a witch hunter laying on of the hands should offend everyone. Questioning whether a presidential candidate is actually some kind of terrorist supporter and lying about his religion is behavior so vile it should not be countenanced. Allowing supporters to shout racial epitaths and incite violence is despicable, to encourage your followers to believe that they had best be ready for their own government to act against them or to seize their property is fomenting violence. These are the things that bring about such revulsion to Governor Palin and her ilk it has nothing to do with who she is but what she is.

Jim Hayes-375865, excellent, thoughtful comment, and I thank you for it.

I think you skillfully underscored the hypothesis of the seeded article: that Palin is despised by (some) liberals because she is so Bushlike. What you describe began with Reagan and came into full bloom with Bush the Younger.

The difference I sense between Bush and Palin is that a lot of Bush rhetoric is façade for politics' sake. Bush was a tool, and I think he knew it and didn't care as long as he got to the Oval Office. With Palin, I think these ideologies are rooted in more fertile soil. She is far more aggressive and demanding, authority be damned. She demonstrated this repeatedly when she was McCain's running mate.

Yeah, Hillary, such a strong woman, taking so much from her cheating husband, again and again, and never quitting, never holding him accountable, choosing instead to bone up on her man pleasing skills for Bill. That takes guts. Why can't all women be so tough to let their husbands do whatever the heck they please with women half their age?

I can only speak for myself...but I can tell you that the reason I originally disliked (not hated) Sarah Palin was her penchant for the easy "right vs. wrong" and "holier than thou" attitude in her speeches, her lack of support for womens' issues and her encouragement of racism and hate at her rallies. Of course, as we learned more about her lack of intellect and her photo-op mentality, I was inclined to like her less.

But to be honest, I did not really start disliking her until I started hearing this right-wing attitude of "but she's a woman...and if you're a feminist, you have to like the woman no matter what"...which pisses me off no end. Just because we want women to have equal rights and equal opportunity does not mean we have to support anything with female parts, regardless of her anti-women rights stance and pro-hate agenda. Women as a whole, and feminists in particular, are not quite as stupid as the Republican Party would expect us to be.

As a feminist, I will fight for and demand Sarah Palin's right to be Governor, President, CEO, or whatever she wants to be...and to be paid just as well as a man to do it. And I also support her rights to believe anything she likes...in politics or religion. But I also fight for and demand my right to compare two (or more) candidates and support and vote for the one that supports my issues and fights for the things I think are important. Sarah Palin was far behind McCain and most of the other Republican candidates in that regard.

"Contempt they have for her intellect"? But where does she keep it and why doesn't she show it? Isn't an election winner expected to, and supposed to finish the term they were elected to? Sorry, Vision, but this action seems to make as much sense as an ashtray on a motorcycle. Are rational people supposed to seriously consider voting for her for president (if she decides that's what she wants? Who knows? I developed a strong dislike for Palin as a person after observing her smarmy, self-righteous, faux folksy demeanor while listening to her stump speeches last year.

When Palin spoke vociferously about Obama while on the 2008 campaign trail, smugly referring to him as an un-American terrorist-sympathizer, she wasn't telling us anything about Obama's lack of patriotism, but rather her own lack of character. The icing on the cake was when she gave that knowing smile to the crowd as it chanted hateful, violence-inciting anti-Obama epithets.

Palin is the type of person who will do and say anything in order to further her own political ambitions.

Typical a Right Wing NeoCon Christian Republican politician.

Look at GWB and his cronies in 2000. They will do anything or say anything about their own, McCain. Right Wing NeoCon Christian Republican politician did to Al Gore, Kerry, Obama, and all the lesser Democrats and Progressive Republicans political offices.

Sarah Palin is what liberals want to deney. A strong professional woman who doesn't share their views. Democrats need to unite the women's vote and can't win elections without it.

All strong professional woman are supposed to be Pro- Choice, Pro Gay Marriage, and Pro every other leftist position. Sarah shows that women do not have to unite with the left to claim their position in the professional world.

I disagree with the article's premise that Sarah Palin is either happy or successful.

She's fallen face down in the poo as far as I can see. Career in the commode. Quitter, under investigation, thrown under the bus by McCain.

She has never appeared happy either. She has that fake phony smile on that I feel hides anger, fear, resentment, a lot of things. She's gone as far as she can on her looks, and it's just not far enough for her.

I have never hated her. I find her disgusting, but I don't hate her. I could, on good days, feel a little sorry for her.

Long-distance psychoanalysis is rarely much good, but I suspect Palin is happy with her family. She seems genuinely interested in her kids and seems to be doing a pretty good job, with the notable and unfortunate glitch of a pregnant teenage daughter. But having raised a teenager of my own, I know that the best of efforts doesn't always succeed. At least Palin is supported the daughter, and her grandchild. Many families would have tossed the kid out.

This seems to be a pattern you always see from the Right that they use to project their feelings of hate on to others to justify their own hate. Arogantly rationalizing that their views are incontrovertible and anyone who disagrees has got to do it because they hate them.

I do think she is an unqualified Joke. And so do most Americans.

Well I guess that I might as well give my reason on why I hate Palin.

1. Plain is a divider among Americans, with her "us and them talk"

2. Palin is a liar, she lied about just everthing including the one about her husband belong to a racist, separatist group for 7 years

3. Palin is a hypocrite in that her asbinstine program didn't even work for her daughter and using a voodoo priest.

4.Palin is a thief, she stole money from the Alaskan people to fly her kids around and spent over $150,000.00 on clothes for her and her family

5. Palin is a quitter and crybaby

Wow... Listen to Keith Olbermann a little much do we.

1) America was way divided before that. We had the ones of the Left screaming "We Lost" and the ones on the Right saying, "Not Yet". The Division began right around there.

2) Prove it and by Prove it I mean legitimate news show and not commentary.

4) Blatant lie. She filed the Ethics report herself so she could pay the money and the 150k on clothes was donated by the RNC and all of it was given back to the RNC.

5) First part is right. I would like you to prove the second.

Jason.... come on, most people feel that Palin is not for all Americans. Also Jason, McCain's campaign manager has been reportedsaying that Mr. Palin did belong to this group where also Mrs. Palin gave a speech okay. I don't care about the clothes going back to the RNC, because Palin did behave like that onthe clothes issue and there is no way around that. She got caught using the people money of Alaska to pay for her kids okay. Now to the last part, Palin cries and fights everyone who has said something bad about her. Her daugther's ex- boyfriend, Letterman and the so-called main media.

#12 and #12.1:

Palin is a liar, she lied about just everthing including the one about her husband belong to a racist, separatist group for 7 years
Prove it and by Prove it I mean legitimate news show and not commentary.

By her own words reported in the Vanity Fair article and on CBS News:

"(Secession)'s not part of their platform and (husband Todd) was only a 'member' bc independent alaskans too often check that 'Alaska Independent' box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan," (Sarah) Palin wrote (in an e-mail to McCain-Palin campaign staff). "He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed."

Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events. In truth, the box that Alaskans have the option of checking when registering to vote states the full name of the party, "Alaskan Independence Party," not "Alaska Independent," which would make an error by uncommitted voters more plausible. (emphasis added)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/01/politics/main5128672.shtml

Believe me, no snow machine (snowmobile) champ born in Alaska doesn't know what the Alaskan Independence Party is; no one who's been in Alaska a year doesn't know it, and he was in the party from 1995 to 2002... and why does she aver that secession isn't part of the platform?

It's not, not really (the notion is to have a statewide referendum on status)... and AIP is not racist in the least. But didn't she get done saying in the same breath that he wasn't a witting member? Not only is she a liar, but she again betrayed her contempt for "The People", especially Alaskans who all know it's no accident when you register AIP. And why? The staffer told her how best to deal with the minor matter and she was having none of it. Why?

Jason Burnham:

4) Blatant lie. She filed the Ethics report herself so she could pay the money and the 150k on clothes was donated by the RNC and all of it was given back to the RNC.

Ahem. The ethics complaint she filed on herself in Alaska was done for the purpose of contradicting the (Rupublican-majority) Legislature's conclusion she was abusing power by firing Public Safety Commission Walt Monehan.

Sorry, that's Walt Monegan; here's a clip from a report on that fiasco:

The Legislature found enough evidence to approve $100,000 to investigate Palin’s firing of the Commissioner of Public Safety, in light of accusations that he was dismissed for not firing her ex-brother-in-law with whom there was bad blood. They spent $75,000 of the money allocated, and the bipartisan Legislative Council (composed of 8 Republicans and 4 Democrats) voted unanimously to go forward. An independent investigation by someone that they all agreed to found that Palin violated the Executive Branch Ethics Act. They unanimously voted to release that decision to the public.

As a counter-measure, and a panicked move to look good during the campaign, Palin (with the advice from the McCain cadre of lawyers headed up by Ed O’Callaghan who had no license to practice law in the State of Alaska) initiated her own ethics complaint against herself, knowing that the outcome would be decided by a friendly panel of governor-appointed people who report to her. Guess what? They found her innocent, and refused to even investigate the matter of testimony from Palin that went completely against testimony from the former commissioner. Frivolous ethics complaint? No….a calculated one that the state paid for.

What did the legislature do about their own $75,000 investigation that found the governor in violation of the Ethics Act? Nothing. So, why did we, as a state, pay that $75,000? What did we get for that money? Maybe that’s the question we should be asking.

If you read Jimmy Carter's "malaise" speech, you'll see that he was attempting to address many of the deep crises we are facing today, particularly energy (gas prices) and consumption and materialism (credit card debt, housing bubble and bust) and many more statements that, today, seem quite prophetic. Some samples:

It's clear that the true problems of our Nation are much deeper -- deeper than gasoline lines of energy shortages, deeper even than inflation or recession

It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our Nation.

We've always had a faith that the days of our children would be better than our own. Our people are losing that faith, not only in government itself but in the ability as citizens to serve as the ultimate rulers and shapers of our democracy.

In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities, and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns.

As you know, there is a growing disrespect for government and for churches and for schools, the news media, and other institutions. This is not a message of happiness or reassurance, but it is the truth and it is a warning.

Looking for a way out of this crisis, our people have turned to the Federal Government and found it isolated from the mainstream of our Nation's life. Washington, D.C., has become an island. The gap between our citizens and our Government has never been so wide.

Just as Carter tried to tell the truth to a citizenry and market that turned a deaf ear, Obama is trying to address numerous crises simultaneously.

I have one question: How would Palin manage all of the problems Obama is tackling?

McCain would have had us attack Iran. Do you remember when the Georgian conflict was going on and he stated we are all Georgians. I am waiting for him to state that we are all Iranians.

Please explain these "American values" you claim president Obama hasn't stood up for, or is that just "Moral majority" rhetoric??

    AZPADDY

    American VAlues like this?

The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.

    I know... what gives?

    Values vs. Principles.

One is arbitrary opinion, and dependant on the personal whims and predilections of the individual. No one values the same icecream let alone anything else specific.

The other is incontrovertible ["We hold these truths to be self evident..."] and is what gives us the freedom to have and hold what we each value.

See, this is how you tell when a party has lost it's way and been overrun by the far wing. It usually is the rock bottom before the resurgence.

          Examples:

Mike Dukakis--seriously. Democrats thought he had a chance?
Bob Dole--because Republicans are not all old white guys.
John Kerry--because Ted Kennedy was too old to lose the election himself, so we got his Mini-Me.
Sarah Palin--Because what America wants is a soccer mom who has seen Russia from her window.
John McCain--because what America really wants is an OLDER white guy.

I keep hearing how the Republican Party is shrinking, how the right-wing lunatic fringe is small in number (20 mil or under), and on and on. But they're making an impact, shutting down town hall meetings, carrying loaded guns, shouting out everybody else and getting themselves on the news almost every night.

So, my question is, is the far-right going to fall off the cliff and disappear, or is it going to somehow regroup and reemerge? What is it called these days, anyway? I can't tell the difference between a Republican, a conservative or a neocon.

You know, even after hearing her recent speeches, I still don't hate Palin. I actually find her entertaining.

              I think the pendulum swings.

I remember Reagan winning in 1980. The Democrats had so lost their way nobody knew what to think. Hostages in Iran, and we couldn't even land the helicopters in the desert, much less save them. Runaway inflation, 18% interest, olympic boycott...what a mess.

The pendulum swung right, and for a while it was good. The market went up, people had jobs, later the Berlin Wall came down, and we were able to lead a worldwide coalition to stop the unlawful invasion of an ally. Later, we had "gridlock", and with Ross Perot's unwitting help, the pendulum went back left a little.

Then GWB was elected, and then 9/11 happened. I know most liberals love to hate GWB, but he was not always what he became. That day changed him like it changed all of us, and the pendulum went waaay right.

The problem with extreme moves to one side or the other is that the counter move is usually fast, furious and out of control. That's where I see us now. We'll head left for a while until we hit something that stops us and sends us back right.

I agree with your opinions on this, but the Republican Party we see today is so extreme and so bitter that I can't imagine how they would punish Democrats and liberals were they to regain power. Absolutely. The good thing about it is that the Republican party that comes back to power (whenever that happens) will be a more centrist, less bitter, more likeable group.

Almost, but not quite. The ONLY thing that can go wrong there is if our current run takes us so far off the left deep end that voters would rather have Rush Limbaugh in office. I don't see that happening. In reality what I see is the far left supporters of B.O. getting really pissed off and rounding up some insane lunatics to challenge him in the primaries...but eventually coming back into the fold.

Personally, I am very excited about the Blue Dog movement. I hope we're gonna see a growing coalition of centrist candidates.

Let's remember that Mr. and Mrs. Sarah Palin were Pat Buchanan supporters when he was the most anti-semitic politician in America.

In addition, they were big supporters of Joe Vogler - that Alaskan secessionist scumbag.

Vogler was buried in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, fulfilling his wish that he not be buried under the American flag.

I am supprised that Sarah would have support Pat Buchanan at anything. She supposed to be a strong, intelligent (cough) women, then why didn't she tell Pat to go to hell when he said this:

"Our culture is superior. Our culture is superior because our religion is Christianity and that is the truth that makes men free."

"There were no politics to polarize us then, to magnify every slight. The "negroes" of Washington had their public schools, restaurants, bars, movie houses, playgrounds and churches; and we had ours."

"Rail as they will about 'discrimination,' women are simply not endowed by nature with the same measures of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of Western capitalism."

And then today on Morning Joe (and on numerous other venues) Pat says. "She's a knockout, a fire cracker".

Yep that makes me want to vote for her - Nothing about her intellect, nothing about her policies, nothing about what she could offer the American people. She's hot - THE END (I don't think so - remember in 8 years what she will look like - Politics can be brutal on your physical appearance).

What really pissed me off was Mika saying that Sarah spoke for the "REAL" Americans. Excuse me--- I am a real American - I am an American Indian - Mika, you can kiss my a$$.

Sarah will never speak for me. Her Family Values SUCK, just like Sanford's, Ensign, Foley, Craig, John McCain, Newt Gingrich and the rest of the GOP who think they can ram their religion down my throat. I worship my way and do not expect anyone else to worship the same. I for one would never spend an afternoon getting witches excised from me and would not force anyone else to do that. I would never betray my husband nor would he betray me - we respect and love each other (from day one). He would never dream of committing adultry and neither would I. The problems with the GOP is they can screw around, invoke the Bible and everything is okay with them. Well that's not how it works with my Family Values - you fool around you LOSE everything.

She is a disappointment. She cries and blames everyone else for her failings. She hasn't made any progress with her intellect (it was so evident with her "farewell speech" (rambling, disjointed, desparate). She never sound like a "winner". She has been the "eeyore" (from Winnie the Pooh), "Oh Woe is me" Everyone is picking on poor little me" self-imposed "victim". In two years or three years will she be smarter or sound smarter - NO. If she hasn't made an effort to improve her intellect - she will never take the time (how old is she). Wouldn't you have thought she would have cracked a book or two on the campaign trail or even while she was governor. Her kind of intellect can stay right in Alaaaaaska. I for one would like to see the IQ in our country at least stay stable - she would make sure every kid was indoctrinated in her church and view things the same way she does - NOT MY IN MY LIFE TIME. And I have a long ways to go before kicking the bucket.

Someone said on the blogs that she had a lot more "stones" than President Obama". Well, I have seen some pretty nasty things said about our First Family and there has been "no comment" from the White House. Sarah went looking for disparaging remarks about her. COME ON - Couldn't she have found someone in the media to whine about - She is trying to sue a "blogger" who writes Opinions. What is she going to do - Sue the whole freaking world?

There are many more reason why I would never vote for Sarah Palin and I would avidly campaign against her. I am a women who has worked my entire life since I was 13 years old. I racked blue berries in the late summer and picked apples in the fall to make money to buy my own school clothes. I waited tables, worked in a fish factory cutting the heads and tails off sardines (nasty job). I worked in a Clam factory, shucking clams. I did whatever it took to make the money to go to school and to college. I work my way through college and got my degree in ONE College, not five.

I don't profess to be smarter than anyone else - But I can say I AM AN AMERICAN and thank goodness my Vote counted this time.

Sarah Palin is just a blot on history and should stay there.

Hey! Don't denigrate trailer parks like that! I lived several years in a trailer park as a kid, and I grew up to be a proud liberal.

Seriously? I don't understand this. Do they mean contempt for her lack of intellect? I ask that in all sincerity, because I don't know anyone - liberal or conservative - who considers her mental ability to be anything beyond mediocre. Have you heard this woman speak? Have you read her writing? She's a moron, for crying out loud!

Saint Sarah is the little grasshopper that was agitated prematurely and turned into a locust.

She would have scared me alot more if she declined to run, and commit herself totally to the art of statecraft and prepared for a serious run in 2012.

But the sideshow antics , the proud know nothingism, the cluesless rhetoric has permanently fouled this budding conservative in her political infancy .

I don't blame her for that entirely, the conservative kingmakers that Demanded her anointment much to McCains chagrin.

So now she is damaged goods. But the conservative base is nuts for her, quite literally.
As it is my dream to see her as the GOP candidate in the general, hopefully with Ted Nugent as VP to run against President Obama in 2012.

Remember Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos"? I suggest we give them the encouragement of the rabid right to guarantee that the moderate GOP leadership has no choice but to pick her. Call in conservative radio shows, go to their borg like rallies encouraging support of sister Sarah in right wing lunatic zeal.

Maybe when she gets crushed cons will realize, "wow, look how unopular we are. we suck." but I'll wager they'll just scream Acorn, Soros, Aylinsky!!!8^)

There's no need to hate Sarah Palin - she drew a big X on her forehead the moment she started giving interviews during the election. For two weeks in 2008 it appeared that John McCain was an absolute genius. He overtook Obama in the polls, the GOP was in love with Palin - they seemd unbeatable!

Then she opened her mouth. It's been downhill every since. This woman regularly displays the mental capacity of a cabbage. That ramblerant resignation disaster was painful to watch. I almost felt sorry for her - except when you go back and remember all the vile and nasty things she has said, she deserves every bit of condemnation she gets!

We just witnessed one of the all time mental midgets in American history blow a gasket! And as usual she's now blaming others for it.

Sarah Palin may make it to the White House, but my bet is the only way she's getting in between now and forever is as a guest!

Than I can only hope you will be arrested and charged. Free Speech doesn't mean infringing on another persons right of Free Speech. It never stops to amaze me how the Left yells, "Free Speech" and then always tries to restrcit the rights of others "Free Speech".

It's only Free Speech if it's spoken from my lips.

It's due time that we begin arresting, charging, and throwing in jail those who actively seek to infringe upon the Freedoms of others.

                          Liberals "are" Idiocy and Hypocrisy.

It's the only explanation I can see for all the self loathing hatred that spews from their lips. You want me to change my view on that then you tell people who believe that "Freedom" only belongs to them and not others to knock it off. Tell the Left to respect the Freedom of Speech of others. You may not agree with what I say but that doesn't give you the right to keep me from saying it or listening to some one who is saying it.

Tell the Left to respect the Freedom of Speech of others. You may not agree with what I say but that doesn't give you the right to keep me from saying it or listening to some one who is saying it.

You might want to explain that to Palin and her attorney. They are the ones threatening to sue over any speculation discussed.

Hypocirsy and the left. The word tolerance keeps coming up. They certainly preach tolerance, but I'm afraid there is no tolerance for people or candidates with differing views. Now on the idiocy thing how about trying to sell a vacated senate seat to the highest bidder or maybe Barney Frank telling the congress everything is fine over at Fannie Mae where his lover works. Let's see, what else?

You know what tipped me over the edge? When she winked at the camera during the VP debates? I mean, give me a @!$%#ing break. You want people to take you seriously, and you're going to wink during a debate? Nuh-uh.

Independent, strong, humorous, family woman, successful, well spoken, career driven, well paid, politically shrewd, respected, sexy, making her own decisions, happy, taking responsibility for her own life and future, a go getter and many positive things more.

Well, I do find her humorous. But well-spoken? Did you actually watch her resignation speech? That was the most rambling bit of speaking I've heard since she interviewed with Couric. And yeah, she's taking responsibility for her own life, at the expense of Alaska. @!$%# off Alaska! I don't care that you elected me to a full term! I've got my own @!$%# to deal with, says Palin.

I don't hate her. I find her mildly amusing, and I would like her to go away now.

That stupid wink. Her whole campaign had "coached" written all over it.

In hindsight we can now see that McCain's selection of Palin over several other well qualified choices was a cynical party driven choice that he just let happen. Fred Barnes and other "Beltway boys" went to Alaska and were smitten by Palin and returned to tell the G.O.P. that she was the one. Of course they weren't thinking with the right head, and McCain just went along like a leaf in the wind.

Obama was the only choice the nation could have made. We dodged a real bullet.

After reading the accounts from aides given to her for both the governor's election in Alaska and the McCain camp, I'm not sure Palin ever allowed herself to be coached by anyone for anything. That wink may be all hers.

I can't reconcile the fact that anyone could support a candidate for the office of the Vice President of the United States who isn't aware of the most basic, fundamental issues facing the nation in these times.

Sarah Palin's total ignorance of a well known issue, such as the "Bush doctrine" should, on its own, disqualify her for any national elective office, and I believe it did.

                          "Successful business woman"??

Personally, I doubt Sarah Palin could organize a one car funeral.

In looking back on this, what bothers me are these questions:

                          1. Was Palin the best the GOP could put up there?

                          2. Why was such a lousy vetting job done?

                          3. Does the GOP know how to do its homework?

If the answer to just one of those questions is "yes," the GOP has no business being in politics.

I regard the whole Palin debacle as the responsibility of, first, the GOP and, second, all the individuals, including McCain, who put her on the ticket.

Not if you listen to conservatives. Generally, they believe that liberals want to run and control everything, from how often you eat to how many hours you sleep each night. I'm not paranoid enough to buy into any of that, but try convincing conservatives that liberals are about freedom, recognition of the working man and woman, and progress. Ain't gonna happen...unfortunately.

You know what's comical about that reality? I see many comments on Newsvine from conservatives (or whatever they are—I don't think anyone knows anymore what constitutes a conservative or a Republican) that Obama is using the leverage that was put in place by GWB to advance his agenda of fascism (that is, Obama's agenda of fascism). I'm sorry, but people who say these things don't know what fascism is. Look at Iran. That's full-blown fascism.

This is fear mongering and they know better, or the really are stupid.

They really want their constituents to think this that's for sure.

In a way it is true, we don't want them to have a free reign. They would make it a one party government in a generation. Bush tried and it's scary how close he got. Sadly it is a balance that will be almost impossible to keep.

In a free society, differences of political sentiment result in different political parties. These sentiments resolve themselves naturally into two basic parties: the authoritarian (or monarchist, tory, etc.) that favors government that controls the people, and the democratic (or republican, liberal, etc.) that favors government controlled by the people. The body of the nation chooses a path that is mapped by one or the other of these parties.

You're right. Pushing the idea that liberals want to turn the U.S. into a fascist state is fear mongering. In that agenda I see two components: 1. the side that perpetuates that deliberate disinformation; 2. the side that consumes it...hook, link and sinker, to lean heavily on the cliché.

I wish I already knew what you know, Dan. The history of American political parties, the founding fathers, the early government and the import of its documents are a lot for the novice to get his/her head around, but it is always time well spent. I've spent a lot of time reading on these subjects, and it is still a lot to digest and retain. I hope readers check out the link you provided. At the same time, I wonder, what percentage of Americans genuinely care about these principles over all else. We've become very narcissistic, in my opinion.

Given the times we live in, those among us who are capable could show their greatest patriotism by getting educated on these basic principles of American government and then becoming activists of some sort, mild to —calling and writing our senators and representatives, getting informed on candidates and what their records are, being sure to vote in every election, et cetera. I think the reality is that too few of us care enough to invest that kind of time and energy into our country. What I don't know is if this is due to' apathy, influence or incompetence, or something else altogether.

It's important to note while reading history that No one has ever been born into this world Perfect. No one is without fault of beyond reproach... No one.And civilazation does not advnce by thinking that the lowest common denominator is the rule.

Culture is the pursuit toward total perfection from the best which has been thought, or said in the world. Matthew Arnold.

The "Divine Right" do not hold to this fact and disregard all the good a person does if they find one thing the can call a flaw and exploit as a weakness. In this they are unforgiving.

George Washington Lied, and never chopped a cherry tree down in his life. But to instill a love our Country, those are some of stories we told our children. Is this an excuse now to Hate America? They were stories, used to unify a country of immigrants.

Buit now, this is the curse of our times. And this glass house the "Right" has built over the years of nurtured ignorance of the people, to bring all progress we have made crashing down. And discredit it all... to replace it with what we fought to be free from over 230 years ago.

I only hope I don't live long enough to see it happen.

To compromise with an enemy by meeting them halfway, when you're half dead already is no compromise.

I know how hard they are pushing for health care, and we need to, but do you know what really should be made free for all Americans if we are to perserve this country.... Education, as Far as any who want to go and are capable of achieving, while still maintaining good grades.

"And say, finally, whether peace is best preserved by giving energy to the government or information to the people. This last is the most certain and the most legitimate engine of government. Educate and inform the whole mass of the people. Enable them to see that it is their interest to preserve peace and order, and they will preserve them. And it requires no very high degree of education to convince them of this. They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." --Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1787.

...here's a bit of what we could use right now:

An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't. —Anatole France

I love post like this. . . in fact I "tune in" almost daily to get my chuckles at the goofy right wing posts on Newsvine.

FYI VC - No self-respecting liberal, Obama supporter, or independent intelligent American hates, fears, dislikes, (you can fill in the blank) Sarah Palin. Most of us want her to run for president in 2012 because, if for no other reason, it will reduce the amount of money we will have to donate to the candidacy of President Obama. We'll simply have to throw in $25.00 and then show up at the polls to vote with the other 80% of Americans to re-elect to hardest working president we've had in many years. Anyhow, thanks for the laughs, keep up the “good” work, 'cause we Obama supporters appreciate the Palin antics and posts.

fivethirtyeight.com certainly isn't a conservative outlet (I wouldn't say it's liberal, either -- it's generally a look at numbers and what they mean) and the post definitely doesn't have a conservative slant at all no matter how you want to spin it.

Again: Do you even know what you're criticizing, or are your responses posted on auto-pilot?

I think this is one of the most even-handed articles on Sarah Palin I've ever seen, which is why I seeded it. It's not interested in making fun of her or exploiting her numerous errors. In my opinion, it's a fair assessment of Palin's core beliefs based on her words and actions. The Palin and Bush similarities were right on the money.

Personally, I'm tired of the political bashing, left and right. I think we need understanding. In my dreams, I see reasonable people of differing viewpoints caring enough about their country and society to sit down and find the compromises necessary to move this nation forward. Granted, some things are still black and white, e.g., gay rights. However, the Constitution should be the last word on such matters. But what do I know?

But it only goes to show that Liberals really are hateful and self-righteous far, far more than the Conservative camp these days. Just look through these posts here in this thread. Sickening language that at he same time continuing to attack Sarah Palin, instigates that all who vote for her, or think she has positive sides, are equally OK to target with the same, foul langage.

                                    Liberal thugs!

I have always been independent, and have never been interested in belonging to a specific party - but the Liberal agenda of hate and vomit and as we have seen here is so outrageous that no normal person with interest in politics would consider being in alliance with such immature and demeaning characters. They have become exactly what they accuse other of being!

I guess war really IS the only option left, as normal respect for other peoples' point of view is no longer under consideration. So be it.

I will readily concede that those on the left are just as passionate about their issues and viewpoints as conservatives/Republicans are. But I must dissent with your assertion.

My experience on Newsvine and in real life is that Republicans/conservatives/"Republican" Independents are far less forgiving of those with whom they disagree and much more vengeful when it comes to their ideologies, politics and politicians. I think the evidence for this can be easily found in the ’08 campaigns. I didn't hear Democrats and liberals shouting the kinds of things I heard from Republicans and conservatives. There were no calls for "kill him" or "terrorist" or "The One" from the Democratic camps. I watched and listened carefully to the interviews with white people in West Virginia saying they wouldn't, couldn't vote for Obama because "he scares me," "he's not like us." Can you at least admit these things for me? For my edification? To help me believe that truth has not died eternally?

Being more of a liberal than a conservative, I can imagine that it's very challenging for someone of your persuasion to read many of the comments from those on the left and not feel insulted or degraded. The same thing happens to me at times when comments from those on the right. So, I ask you, cast aside the bitter remarks. Disregard them altogether, and focus on the facts. If we cannot face facts together as a people—all of the facts—we are doomed. Our government will take full advantage of our inattention. We must join together and correct this runaway train called D.C. and K Street. That will only be done through cooperation and compromise.

Actually, that has been found by academics in the field of Political Science to be probably the single most characteristic feature of neoconservatism, as perhaps best exemplified by the Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz/Rice abandonment of the Kissingerian approach to Realpolitik in favour of a more ideological and (dare I say it?) faith-based approach in which 'evildoers' were to be opposed regardless of political exigencies.

But hell, OK...since we're in the land of make-believe, I'll play along.

Don't ever, ever begin to believe in your own BS.
                                    Just a friendly warning.

Not my BS, but BS developed by those blessed by the halls of academe.

I notice that you don't deny the neoconservative tendency toward good vs evil absolutism, hence the very black and white mentality you attempted to attribute to liberals.

It was what Ben Bradlee used to call a "non-denial denial", wasn't it?

                                    • capable of thinking or acting for oneself
                                    • not relying on a political party's stereotype.

Yet you seem to simply lockstep with the Right and put down the Left, across the board and rely on stereotypes of the Left in all your comments. I think you have an overinflated sense of being so very "independent." Because you seem far from that description.

I think you are a "left stereotype" and therefore it is relatively unimportant what you think?

What smarta$$ response to a comment from someone that is well within the C.O.H. guidlines. He simply says he loves posts like this, and you go ballistic. Nowhere did he mention that the article is liberal or conservative.

Do you even know what your talking about??
